Average Time To Lose Baby Weight?

Is there an average time it takes to lose your baby weight? If your youngest is at school, can you really still blame the jelly belly on your babies?

How long does the ‘post natal’ (or post partum if you’re reading this in the middle of my night) bit last?

Well in my experience (& my clients’), a correctly prescribed postnatal exercise programme will put your body back to where you want to be well within a year of having your baby, including tackling the mummy tummy. If you commit to the exercise & lifestyle guidelines & eat for health & vitality (i.e. if you follow all the rules… ;) ) you can certainly be back in your jeans or even a bikini 4-5 months after having your baby.

BUT… & its a big BUT… most women don’t actually have the guidance, the inclination or the energy to commit to a ‘correctly prescribed  post natal exercise programme’ in the first few months after childbirth. Actually, come to think of it, within the first year or 3 ;)

Can’t imagine why. Anyone would think those early months & years were hard work, or tiring, or utterly overwhelming or something…  Anyway, point is, most don’t. Which means, that unless you are blessed with REALLY lucky genes, then that mummy tummy is going to be obscuring the waistband of your jeans for some months or years to come.

But it’s never to late to start knocking those wobbly bits back into shape!

I can already hear your ‘I’m the exception to the rule!’ cries: ‘But my stomach muscles split! / ‘I’ve had 3 c-sections’ / ‘I’ve got big bones’ or ‘My mother never lost hers either’. But it can be done dear fellow knackered mum. Honest.

So, Question:  “What’s the average time it takes to lose baby weight?”

Answer: Until either your fairy Godmother waves the washboard abs wand, or you give it some help.

Can you relate to the school gate “Just can’t lose the baby weight”  chorus?  Or have you lost all yours? How long did it take you? Come on – tell us your tales of mummy tummy woe :)

I’m coming up for my 12th year of postnatal tummy. Does the antedote involve working up a sweat? I’m allergic to effort (which explains everything!)

Hi Alice, I hope you make your 12 year old feel sufficiently guilty on a daily basis for causing your distress!

Yes & no is the answer… the Masterclass itself: no sweat at all. Just 2 hours in the comfort of yours or a friend’s house (you can even drink wine if you want!) while I impart the knowledge you need, demonstrate my (non-sweaty) secret moves which really do WORK, do a (fully clothed) test on each of you to establish your own personal muscle split & prescribe what each of you need to do about it.

You’ll need to put down the wine glass for the test & to try out a few moves for yourself, but it’s NOT an exercise class. In fact you’ll gain more insight into how to eliminate a postnatal tummy in those 2 hours than you’d get from 20 classes!

The bad news, is that there could be some extra fat sitting on top of those muscles… & THAT might require some sweat on your part to get rid of. But I’ll tell you what to do about that too – I have devised 15-minute targetted workouts for mums to do on their own, having found that hour-long ones don’t tend get done…!

I didn’t start to do anything about it until baby was 9 months (too knackered)- now he’s 14 months and I’ve lost 2 stone with about 10lb to go. But that last bit is just not coming off!! Argh!!!

    • http://mutusystem.com Wendy Powell

@openid-54940:disqus 2 stone down is  brilliant – well done! The 10lb will happen… just keep at it – good luck :)

  • Sarah

Somehow I managed to get through a first pregnancy (five years ago) without gaining any weight or a mummy tummy (apart from the baby weight I mean….obviously I weighed more when I was pregnant but it all came off almost straight after the birth).  Second time round not so lucky.  Gained while pregnant, gained in the year after he was born (he’s now 16 months).  All this despite being a committed MuTu exerciser for the last year!  The 2 stone extra slowly coming off now I’ve cut out alcohol and caffeine!!!

You’ve done great Sarah – you’re strong, supple & fit. It just sounds like a few wine calories were covering up all that hard work for a while… there’s a 6 pack in there waiting to be revealed :)

lost all baby weight and then some within 9 weeks of having twins!!

2nd time around, baby #3 and with all under 4 yrs old…. if you belived the likes of heat and closer magazine (aka “running around after little ones just burns the calories off”) I would be a much lovelier version of myself… alas running after 3 kids under 4 makes me pretty terrible at will power (apart from my vow not to have any more babies!!).  The weight is coming off - the last 8 lbs are proving pretty stubborn but I will conquer!

    • http://mutusystem.com Wendy Powell

That always makes me chuckle… like sitting with a cup of tea & a biscuit & occasionally lurching after an errant toddler is going to do the job… You will conquer those 8lbs Nic… its just fat & it’s fallible!! PS Liking the ‘no more!’ willpower ;)

  • Sabrina Deberry

I gained 33 pounds during pregnancy. Was very active (previous endurance athlete). My baby is 13 weeks old and I have 15 pounds to go. I have been running twice a week and doing yoga once a week. I also take walks with baby. I hope that I will have it gone within the next 3 months.

You’re doing great Sabrina! Make sure you do some core & pelvic floor strengthening too – a lot of running very soon after childbirth can cause pelvic problems later on if you don’t *hold it all in*… :0 Keep your pelvic floor strong & you’ll soon lose the rest of the weight with everything else that you’re doing!
