Fix Diastasis Recti | Fix Your Mummy Tummy?

the mummy tummy masterclass

Yes, I KNOW this one's just a bit flabby, but I didn't have many model volunteers. Anyone?

Diastasis Recti contributes to a post partum or post natal ‘mummy tummy’. But its not the whole story.

Another mum contacted me today who has been told, by her doctor, that she has to accept a 7 month’s postnatal tummy, that looks like it’s 5 month’s pregnant, as ‘just what happens after you have children’.

A Mummy Tummy that protrudes, domes, causes backache, & inspires ‘Oooh, when’s the next one due?’ comments, is NOT any fun at all, & more importantly NOT something you have to just put up with. Whatever your doctor says.

Do YOU feel like your’re the only one who feels like their innards are falling out the front of their tummy?  Like you’re the only one who wets herself *just a little* (or maybe quite a bit) every time they sneeze, cough or try to run for the bus.

I promise you you’re not. Each of us may or may not want to invest the time & effort to attaining a six pack (ahem… I don’t), but you can achieve a lot firmer, flatter & less pregnant-looking version of what you’ve got.

This particular lady had bought a quite-well-known mummy tummy book  which she had found slightly confusing, quite hard to follow & well… her mummy tummy was still there.

Diastasis Recti (the sole focus of the book & the Technique she had tried) is indeed a major factor in determining the shape of many women’s mummy tummy. And the book & Technique she had tried is very thorough & effective at correcting diastasis recti.

But Diastasis Recti is ONLY ONE FACTOR. There are 4 more, (get them all with MuTu System download!). Knowing ALL the factors that cause a mummy tummy is the first stage. Learning how to engage, use & strengthen all the right muscles, how to exercise very effectively in a short space of time, how to eat, how to actually make it all happen… that’s the next very important stage!

Have you been asked the dreaded ‘Having another one?’ question on the school run? Or been told by a doctor or ‘expert’ there’s nothing you can do? Please share your stories!

I have been very lucky and not had this problem myself. However, only yesterday I did ask another of the mothers at nursery how long she still had left… the baby was born 6 weeks ago, which I guess could be worse. I blame the fact that the baby has always been with her mother every time I’ve seen her!

I think the best advice is… unless she’s patting her bump proudly & telling everyone when it’s due… don’t ask! Great to discover your blog JulieB – our kids are the same age!

I don’t have enough nerve to ask the “are you expecting question” — as I ALWAYS get it wrong.

Hi, Wendy. I´m the mother of a sixteen months old baby boy. I´m small and have always been very thin. I live in Bilbao (The Basque Country-Spain). I gained a lot of weight during my pregnancy and my boy was huge. I have loosed nearly every pound, but my belly is a disaster. Its like jelly and rounded and it looks like I´m still pregnant´. More than a year ago I bought Julie Tupler´s book and the dvd, and I´m doing the exercises religiously. But they are not working for me. My diastasis is about 3-4 firgers wide and I don´t know what am I doing wrong.

Here nobody knows about the diastasis. The doctors don´t think its important. It´s only aesthetical and you are suposed to live with it or have it surgically repaired.

I don´t know what to do. I eat healthy food but I cannot lose more weight because I´m already very thin. Can it be restored fat? Or is everything due to the diastasis? How can you tell the difference and how can you actually heal a diastasis?

    Thank you for your attention.

Hello Nerea, Usually retained fat is PART of the problem as well, although it sounds like this may not be the case for you. If you have been doing the Tupler exercises correctly, then the gap should have closed more than that in a year. 3-4 fingers isn’t very excessive, but it depends how wide it was when you started… there could be a more severe weakness that may require surgery. Sometimes a severe diastasis may actually be an umbilical hernia – this is much less common, but would require surgery to repair (although the exercsies will help).

Without assessing you personally, it is impossible for me to ascertain whether you are doing anything ‘wrong’, but it sounds like EITHER despite going through these exercises, you are still not engaging the mucles correctly, OR you have a hernia & may require surgery. You’ll have to get assessed by a really good doctor or physio to decide this. Please sign up for my newsletter to make sure you hear about the MuTu System complete download which is being launched in the next couple of weeks! Good luck!

      Wendy:

I apreciate your answer. I really don´t know why the tva engaging exercises are not working for me. I´m going to look for a doctor who can tell me if a have a severe diastasis wich is almost a hernia or not.

Nevertheless, I would like to ask you two more questions. In your proffesional work have you seen any woman who is very thin but has retained fat on the belly? Have you seen anybody with retained fat only on the belly really loosing it with your exercise system?

And regarding to the exercises, how do you feel when your tva is properly engaged?

I have bought the mutu system programme and I have read the part about finding and engaging the tva, but I still need some further advice.

      Thank you in advance.

PS, a hernia hurts if you give the protuberance a gentle squeeze, a diastasis doesn’t. So if the area is very tender, or painful, you need to see a doctor. If it protrudes & sticks out, but isn’t painful, it’s more likely to be a combination of diastasis & a weak transverse muscle.
Bloating due to excess sugar &/or food intolerance is another possibility (this is all in the MuTu Food section of your programme).
Poor posture combined with a weak transverse also… in the Posture section!

        But please give me a call anyway 0700 340 1287 & we’ll have a chat!

  • Jenubeba

Hi, I’ve been searching for something to help me with my diastasis recti (didn’t even know i had it). My son will be 5 years old this month and i have tried many things to get back to pre-pregnancy body. I have been asked a few times about being pregnant so i did all i could (eating healthy and gym) to get to my pre-pregnancy weight but nothing has helped with my belly bulge. After all that hard work losing the weight and going to the gym people continued to ask. :( This is really depressing and i need help. I am short and small and that seems to make the belly more apparent, i think. I’m looking into the Mutu system but i’m hesitant to spend the $$ and not being able to do it.

The System starts you out slowly & takes you step by
step, week by week through 4 Phases of core strength & stability. The ‘pregnant looking’ tummy is very indicative of diastasis recti. Your work in the gym is not making your tummy flat & is very likely actually counterproductive. So the System can definitely help you. If you have any further questions about the System, please just ask :)
