If you’re feeling overwhelmed right now, seeing 101 different workout options and still not finding the time to do any of it, the first thing that I want you to do is to lower your bar and your expectations. Once you do that, the pressure is totally off. Feel better already?!
MUTU has always been about progress, not perfection and if there was ever a time to lower the bar, to have more patience and grace with yourself. It’s during a worldwide pandemic. Am I right?
Your walk might not look like a walk, your core workouts, your intensive workouts, your progression through the modules, these all might look different right now and need adjustment as you juggle working from home, homeschooling and having the whole family at home.
Just know that whatever you can do is always going to matter more than what you cannot do. If you can only manage one thing, then pick your one thing and stick with it.
You’ll feel so good for it, I promise.
If you are in a place where, right now, it is possible to get outside and go for a short walk, whilst practicing social distancing, you should be making this your number one priority. Being outside and walking, even just down your street and back is so beneficial for your mental health. You’ll feel lighter, brighter, and like you have more headspace. Guaranteed! Walking is the best way to just feel better and clear your head. Just go for it.
If you cannot get outside or you can’t go out for a walk, if you live in a place in the world where you cannot leave your house except for absolute essentials, this blog and video is dedicated to you. We’re sending you so much love and strength right now during this really hard time. We’re here to support you, this community is full of women just like you all around the world, we’re in this together.
If you’re inside staying safe, I’m going to give you some suggestions of what you can do to adjust your daily MUTU walk and still get the benefits I mentioned above. This is about helping you feel better physically and mentally.
Shift your mindset, away from walking your daily walk. Focus instead on daily movement. Right now, it’s about doing the best you can. Here are some really easy suggestions that you could do to change your daily walk into daily movement.
1. Take the stairs
If you have stairs in your house, set a timer on your phone for five minutes, and I want you to do stair intervals. This is so great to get the heart rate up, to build a booty burn, to just feel your body come alive for five minutes. For five minutes you’re gonna do 30 seconds on 30 seconds off, and I want you to go up and down your stairs for 30 seconds straight, and then stop, and breathe and rest for 30 seconds, and so on for 5 minutes.
2. Put everything on hold and do a dance party
Blast your favorite song, have 10 minutes of pure joy and happiness. We need, now more than ever, to be silly and let our hair down. Bust out all the moves, get down low and jump up high.
3. Rock out in your backyard
If you have a backyard and you’re able to get outside, do some walking laps. Spend five minutes, put on some music or a podcast, and just walk around your backyard. Breathe in the fresh air and enjoy each step.
4. Kick Your heels up in your living room
Do it in your living room, or around your house. Again you could put some headphones on and enjoy a podcast or your favourite tunes to make it more enjoyable. Set a timer and enjoy some time to yourself, if you can.
5. Set up an obstacle course
How about setting up an obstacle course for you and the kids. Get out some masking tape and set up hopscotch, weave in and out of some books placed on the floor, crawl under and climb over stuff. Get creative and make it a fun game with your kids.
6. Park further from the store
When you can get outside of your house to go grocery shopping. Try to make this your movement for the day by parking as far away from the store as possible. You’ll have to walk further. Right now we’re not going to linger around the store and prolong our shopping experience any longer than needed, but you will benefit from parking a little further away to extend your walk into the store.
7. Dust off that elliptical or a treadmill
If you have an elliptical or a treadmill, I do want to touch on this. If you have a cardio machine, feel free to use them, but I do suggest that you also try to mix it up with some of the other suggestions above, because ellipticals and treadmills are very repetitive in movement. It’s not a natural movement. On the treadmill, the ground is literally moving under you, and you’re not using your body to propel yourself forward and activate your glutes as much as you would be if you were walking overground. So, if you have cardio machines do not be afraid to use them but make sure you mix it up.
There are going to be days where you are going to feel low motivation, where it’s gonna be really hard to try to find the get-up-and-go required for movement, but I encourage you to just set a timer and start moving, even if it’s just walking down the hall.
