For many of us, running is the one space where we feel like ourselves the most. It is mental clarity, it is solitude, and it is a reminder of what our bodies are capable of. That is why it feels so frustrating when that trust suddenly evaporates when we try to get back to running postpartum.

You might have set out with the best intentions, only to pull up short because something felt “off.” It isn’t always sharp pain. Most times, it is just a quiet, nagging sense of vulnerability, a feeling that your core simply cannot hold you the way it used to.

When this happens, the physical symptoms such as a feeling of heaviness or a worry about leaking are almost secondary to the emotional reality: You don’t feel safe.

At this point, the natural reaction is to internalise this. You might worry that you have “ruined” your body, or that the part of you that identifies as a runner is gone forever.

First, please know that listening to that signal was the right thing to do.

Also, that “unsafe” feeling isn’t a sign of weakness or a broken body; it is often your body protecting you. But crucially, hearing that signal does not mean you have to stop forever. You can absolutely get back to running postpartum.

Why “Just Getting Fitter” Doesn’t Always Fix It

If you have already tried to fix this by simply “pushing through” or doing hundreds of static Kegels (squeezes) at a traffic light, you might have found that the symptoms persisted.

This experience can be incredibly frustrating, leaving you feeling like your body is failing despite your best efforts.

But for many women, the issue isn’t a lack of effort or discipline. The reality is that running requires a completely different strategy than walking or static exercises. It is entirely possible to have a “strong” pelvic floor that is currently uncoordinated, meaning it doesn’t know when to fire to support you during a run.

The Science of Impact and Timing

To understand why walking feels fine but running feels scary, it helps to look at what we are asking our bodies to do.

Running is a high-impact activity. With every step, your body absorbs a significant amount of force often estimated at around 2.5 times your body weight.

To handle this load safely, your pelvic floor needs to do more than just be strong, it needs to be responsive.

In a fully supported core, the pelvic floor muscles anticipate the impact, engaging milliseconds before your foot hits the ground. This anticipation provides a stable base for your bladder and organs. However, if you feel heaviness or leaking, it may simply be that this timing is currently out of sync.

Pregnancy and birth can sometimes fuzz the connection between our brain and our core muscles. So if that signal is slightly delayed, or if the muscles are “sleeping,” the impact bypasses your muscular support and puts pressure on your passive structures instead.

That feeling of instability isn’t a permanent injury; it is often just your body saying, “I don’t have the coordination to handle this load yet.”

Bridging the Gap with Reflexive Training

This is where the distinction between general “fitness” and true “function” becomes critical.

To get back to the pavement safely, you need a bridge. You need to retrain your pelvic floor to be reflexive meaning it reacts automatically to movement, without you having to consciously think about it.

This is what the MUTU System is focused on rather than static strength or “feeling the burn.” We help with reconnecting the neurological pathways that control your core through:

  • Breath-Led Connection: We use specific breathwork to remind your pelvic floor how to move in rhythm with your diaphragm.

  • Automatic Engagement: The goal is to retrain your core to fire automatically when you move, so you don’t have to clench or “squeeze” with every stride.

  • Progressive Load: We gradually introduce movements that mimic the impact of running, preparing your tissues to handle the load safely before you hit the road.

Your Path Back to Running Postpartum

You don’t need to accept leaking as your new normal, and you certainly don’t need to be afraid of movement.

By shifting your focus from general “cardio” to specific “core connection,” you can build the foundation that makes running feel safe again. When you trust your body to hold you, the fear disappears and you can finally enjoy the run.
