Some clinicians call this postpartum dyspareunia, but you don’t need a diagnosis to know it’s real and worth addressing. You aren’t failing your partner, or losing your spark, your body is simply currently placing protection over pleasure.

Why Does Sex Hurt After Having a Baby?

To understand why sex after birth can feel difficult, we have to look past the “libido” and look at the nervous system.

If you have experienced birth trauma, ongoing pelvic pain, or even just the high-stress environment of early motherhood, your pelvic floor muscles can enter a state of “guarding” – a common driver of pelvic floor pain after birth.

In this state, the muscles are perpetually tight because your nervous system perceives a need for protection.

When you try to be intimate while your body is in this “protection mode,” the pelvic floor cannot fully relax. This tension is often what leads to discomfort or pain. Your brain sees this pain as a threat, which causes the muscles to tighten even more.

So it isn’t a “lack of desire,” it is a protective loop where your body is trying to keep you safe from a sensation it perceives as overwhelming.

Reconnecting Without Pressure

The mistake most people make-and the one that causes the most stress-is trying to “push through” the discomfort.

But you cannot negotiate with a guarding reflex. You have to prove to your body that it is safe to let go.

This is why the MUTU System approach to intimacy doesn’t start in the bedroom, it starts with the breath.

By focusing on down-regulating your nervous system, you can begin to break that loop of tension.

Building Reflexive Ease: As your nervous system begins to feel safe, the guarding reflex naturally softens. Intimacy stops being something you have to “brace” for and becomes a space where you can actually be present.

Safe Foundations: We use gentle, breath-led work to teach the pelvic floor how to release. You cannot have function without the ability to fully let go.

Non-Goal Oriented Movement: We help you reconnect with your pelvic space in a way that has nothing to do with “performance” or “sex,” and everything to do with comfort and self-trust.

Finding Your Way Back

You don’t have to “just live with” discomfort, and you don’t need to force yourself into situations that don’t feel safe.

Healing this disconnection is a slow, gentle process of reclaiming your body for yourself first.

When you rebuild that internal trust and learn how to help your pelvic floor relax, the path back to intimacy becomes much clearer and much kinder.

Start Healing Postpartum Intimacy Pain – Free Trial

There is a specific kind of internal pressure that comes after having a baby.
