Established by NHS England in 2013, the HIN exists to speed adoption and innovation to improve health outcomes. The <a href=\"https:\/\/healthinnovation-kss.com\/bridging-the-gap\/transforming-postpartum-care-mutu-system-demonstrates-significant-impact-and-value-in-nhs-evaluation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HI KSS website announcement of the report is here<\/a>. HI KSS commissioned Unity Insights in 2022 to carry out research to evaluate MUTU&#8217;s ability to help women manage conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse (POP), urinary incontinence (UI), and dyspareunia (painful sex). The <a href=\"https:\/\/unityinsights.co.uk\/our-insights\/evaluation-of-mutu-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unity Insights announcement of the report is here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What did they study and how?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unity Insights studied the real-world implementation of MUTU within the UK&#8217;s NHS. They used surveys conducted among postpartum patients given MUTU by their GP or at a specialist physiotherapy appointment, alongside a group who had paid for the MUTU programme themselves. They also gathered feedback from GP practices and clinicians involved in the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The surveys included \u2018before and after\u2019 feedback from patients about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Painful sex and other postpartum symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patient confidence in understanding how to correctly perform pelvic floor exercises, as well as knowing when to seek further medical help<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What were the results?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evaluation showed <strong>statistically significant improvements in pelvic health symptoms, positive patient feedback and a potential return on investment<\/strong> (for the UK NHS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key findings include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Marked reduction in incontinence, bladder leaks, prolapse and painful sex symptoms&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>100% of the UK&#8217;s NHS GP practice patients reported increased confidence in doing their pelvic floor exercises correctly&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>91% of NHS physiotherapy patients and 66% of the UK&#8217;s NHS GP practice patients would recommend MUTU System<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mutusystem.com\/en-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/05\/202404_UI-MUTU-Book-Mock-ups-Qualitative-Insights.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:490px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why was this research needed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over one in three women experience long-term postpartum conditions which impact their well-being and quality of life. But pelvic health is under-served both by the UK&#8217;s NHS support for patients, and in terms of research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inadequate access and outcomes are compounded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/so-nice-inequality-bias-maternal-care-wendy-powell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inequities for black and brown mothers<\/a> and those in marginalised communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many women do not seek medical help for postpartum issues due to embarrassment, shame, lack of understanding (they think these symptoms are normal or inevitable), language or cultural barriers, or lack of time juggling childcare and other commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/national-pelvic-health-service-to-support-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promised government funding<\/a>, the UK&#8217;s NHS-provided pelvic health support is woefully inadequate. This was echoed by a recent campaign and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurefemhealth.com\/p\/elvie-leads-calls-for-uk-government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open letter from Elvie <\/a>and other activists for better pelvic floor health support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MUTU fills this gap for pelvic health support within the UK NHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mutusystem.com\/en-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/05\/202404_UI-MUTU-Book-Mock-ups-Health-Economic-Modelling-Insights.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5641\" style=\"width:463px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do the experts say?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWomen&#8217;s health innovation at its best! \u2026&nbsp; fantastic evaluation which demonstrated significant benefit for women managing pelvic floor conditions. \u2026<\/em><em>This is a great example of what we need to see across the board in how we approach FemTech solutions in the future\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dr-maryann-ferreux-23815bb8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Maryann Ferreux<\/a> <strong>Chief Medical Officer, Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cA brilliant example of how digital can support women\u2019s journeys AND take some of the strain off clinicians.&nbsp; See, the NHS can innovate\u2026now to scale and make available to all the women who need MUTU\u2019s platform to address pelvic strength and urinary incontinence.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/katherinechurch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Katherine Church<\/a>, <strong>Women&#8217;s health and femtech specialist<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201c[MUTU has] impacted the lives of so many women in my practice.
