You and I both know it’s NEVER okay to ask a woman if she’s pregnant. Under no circumstances, even if you’re struggling for small talk, comment on the weather if you have to, just don’t drop the ‘when are you due’ bomb.
Sadly though, there are lots of people who lack the ability to filter before they speak and many of us have been left with that sickening feeling of embarrassment and despair when asked if we’re expecting, when we’re totally NOT!
The only comfort I can give in situations like this is the person asking the awkward question probably feels like a complete idiot and is likely to never open their mouth again. Thank goodness!
- So why is it that you still look pregnant?
- Why is NOTHING you’re trying working?
- Are you destined to wear that loose baggy dress that hides every lump and bump for the rest of your days?
1 and 2 – I’ll explain below. And 3… No. You can and deserve to feel sexy and happy again in your own body again.
So why can’t some women shift their mummy tummy?
Diastasis Recti (‘abdominal separation’, ‘diastasis’ or ‘DR’) is the result of excessive intra-abdominal pressure pushing outwards, un-contained as it should be by your core. I go into more detail about DR right here.
It happens when the body is not aligned in a way that allows the core and pelvic muscles to do their job properly. If your core is weak and not functioning as it should, no matter how many ab exercises you do, you won’t achieve the flat stomach you want.
The truth is those intense ab exercises we’re all encouraged to do to flatten our tummies, could be making things a whole lot worse…
A weak core and pelvic floor just can’t cope with certain exercises and we shouldn’t expect them too either. Your body will give you warning signals if it cannot handle what you’re asking of it and these signals should NEVER be ignored. If you continue and don’t address the warning signs, your ‘pooch’ will remain, if not get worse. Learn how to spot the warning signs here.
The missing piece of the puzzle…
Many women miss and sometimes never discover the importance of alignment. If you’re misaligned and there’s a ‘kink’ in your midline then extra pressure is created inside and that’s when our cores need a little help. Getting realigned goes hand in hand with safe and gentle core exercises to help flatten your tummy.
It’s important to mention here that what we eat has a huge impact on how we look and feel. Do all of the above, great, but if you still have a few pounds of extra fat sitting on top of your abdominal muscles, you won’t see the results of all your hard work. You can lose belly fat by eating real, healthy, nutritious food and getting rid of foods containing refined sugars and processed stuff.
- First and foremost get realigned and continue to work on your alignment every day.
- Eat good, healthy, nutritious food and ditch refined sugars and processed stuff.
- Certain exercises can make your poochy tummy worse.
- Do safe and gentle exercises to help you regain strength in your core properly.
- It’s not a one solution approach. Do all of the above.
