Obstetric Fistula is a condition that can remind us to feel lucky to live in a part of the world where pregnancy, birth and postnatal health care is generally so readily available and advanced. Birth doesn’t always go well for many of us, but the realities and long term consequences of fistula certainly give perspective.
If you don’t know about or have never heard of Obstetric Fistula, it is one of the most isolating and heartbreaking injuries that can occur during unattended, prolonged labour, leaving a woman with severe internal damage, complete incontinence and almost always, with a stillborn baby. If left untreated, the continued damage to a woman’s physical and mental wellbeing can be catastrophic.
It is estimated that at least 2 million women worldwide live with obstetric fistula, with 50 – 100 thousand new cases occurring every single year.
The crazy thing is, this an entirely preventable condition. But there are women in many parts of the world who continue to suffer, due to lack of the right medical support within their communities and a barely existent healthcare system.
The 23rd of May 2017 marks International Day To End Obstetric Fistula, to support the amazing work being carried out around the globe, in rural and poorer areas, to not only help fix the women who’ve endured this injury, but also carry out preventative work and treatment, providing much needed care during pregnancy and childbirth.
MuTu System proudly supports Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia and the incredible work they do. Hamlin Fistula has an inspiring story of its own, and dedicates its work exclusively to women with obstetric fistula, all completely free of charge. Want to read the story? In November 2015 I visited the hospital in Addis Ababa with my family to see for ourselves the results of their truly amazing work. Watch the video here.
